The intercessory Prayer session was led by the Ven. Olasunkanmi Afolabi:
The Vicar, the Ven. Afolabi took the sermon. He gave reasons why God had to do away with the Old Covenant and sent Jesus Christ to the world as the New Covenant. He then backed it up with John 14: 6 where Jesus said, “He is the way the truth and the life…no one comes to the father except through me”.
After which he proceeded to stating the differences between the old and the new covenants. During his sermon he used “Covenant” and “Testament” interchangeably, stating that:
1. Old has to do with the law while the New has to do with Grace and faith.
2. Old Covenant speaks of the prophets and fathers of old while the new speaks of Jesus Christ.
3. Old covenants was accessed once a year, wherewith one must have fasted for 40days, while the new covenant is always available.
4. Old Covenant involved sacrifices by prophets of old while the new covenants has been resolved once by the blood of Jesus.
5. Old covenant was through Moses while the new is through the blood
and body of Jesus Christ.
6. Old covenant puts one in bondage 2hile the new brings freedom. Citing John 8:36 which says “If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed” and 2 Corinthians 5vs17
7. Old Covenant exposes one i.e the nature or degree of you sin is known to all by the items brought for propitiation while the new covenants covers your sin and privately redeems you through the blood of Jesus (Rom 4:7)
8. Old covenant doesn’t give life while the new covenant does.
9. The old covenant cannot completely rid one of sins while the new covenant could.
10. Old covenant comes with curses while the new is a covenant of redemption.
He closed by admonishing all to do away with the old covenant and be controlled and led by the new. That each member of the congregation should learn to cast his or her burden on Jesus – The new covenant. He led the choir in winging ” All to Jesus I surrender” as he returned to his seat.
